Growing up in San Diego, the ocean held the biggest danger. We kids heard many stories about children being pulled out to sea by ferocious rip tides. Then there were the painful jelly fish stings and sharks. My parents had very strict rules about swimming near lifeguards and following all the rules. Unfortunately the most prevalent threat was not understood in the 60’s and that was sun damage and skin cancer; not very exciting but my friends and I are dealing with it years later.
